Spondylitis is a kind of arthritis affecting the spine. The symptoms of Ankylosing spondylitis may include a pain and stiffness in the neck and down to the lower spine.

The condition arise when the spine units (vertebrae) start fusing together then resulting in a stiff spine. The changes arising from this can be mild or severe, and may eventually lead to a stooped posture. Thus an early diagnosis and subsequent treatment will help keep the stiffness and pain in control and prevent significant deformity from befalling.

Even though it can occur at any age, the condition often strikes men in their 20s and teens.

What Are the Symptoms of Ankylosing Spondylitis?

The common and early symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis include:

A constant pain and stiffness in the buttocks, lower back and hips is the most prominent of symptoms and it can continue for more than three months.

Ankylosing spondylitis can also lead to an overgrowth of the bones further leading to faulted joining of bones – this condition being called "bony fusion."

Such a “Bony Fusion” can affect the bones of the neck, back, or hips impairing an individual's ability to carry on daily activities. If the ribs attached to the spine faces a fusion it may even limit his ability to expand the chest when taking a deep breath.

Another symptom seen is a pain in ligaments and tendons.

An important thing to note about Ankylosing spondylitis is that it is a systemic disease, which means that its symptoms may not be just limited to affecting the joints.

Patients may also have fever, fatigue, and loss of appetite. Lung and heart problems can also develop in rare cases.

Although a specific cause haven’t been associated with ankylosing spondylitis, there is a strong suggestion of a genetic or family link.
